Help learners understand why equivalent fractions work — before asking them to rely on a shortcut.

Math That Matters — Advanced Fraction Reasoning, Unit 3: Scale Forward and Backward is a complete digital teaching and practice pack focused on equivalent-fraction scaling, scale factors, missing values, simplification paths, and the difference between renaming a fraction and actually changing an amount.

Instead of teaching “multiply the top and bottom” as an isolated rule, this unit begins with meaning. Learners see how the same whole and the same selected amount can be partitioned in different ways and represented by different equivalent fraction names.

From there, learners move from visual models to equations, guided practice, error analysis, real-life decisions, mathematical explanations, and a final Mastery Check.

What You Receive

This purchase includes 3 PDF files — 75 PDF pages total:

1. START HERE — Parent & Educator Guide — 14 pages

A companion guide for the adult supporting the learner. It includes the unit learning system, guidance for learners and adults, suggested pacing, materials, common misconceptions, and a Parent Preview of the Unit 3 goals.

The guide helps adults support mathematical reasoning by asking questions such as “What stays the same?” and “What is the scale factor?” before approving a procedural shortcut. It also provides pacing options for focused practice, a standard unit sequence, intervention, and enrichment.

2. Learner Workbook — Teaching + Practice — 41 pages

The main learner workbook begins with Teach It First, where scaling is introduced as changing a fraction name without changing its value when the numerator and denominator are changed by the same positive factor.

Learners work through scale forward by splitting parts into smaller equal parts, scale backward by regrouping smaller equal parts, missing-numerator and missing-denominator equations, simplify-first strategies, visual models using grids, strips, and collections, and the important distinction between “same amount, new fraction name” and “more of the amount.”

The learner sequence includes 4 Teach It First Quick Checks, 12 Practice It problems, See It, Build It, Connect It, Error Detective, Decide in Real Life, Explain Your Thinking, and a 5-item Mastery Check. The final Mastery Check is used to help determine whether the learner is ready to move forward or should revisit a specific part of the unit.

3. Answer Key & Support Tools — 20 pages

This is more than a final-answer key. It includes reasoning-based answers so an adult can compare the learner’s model, equation, method, and conclusion — not just check whether the final number is correct.

Support resources include Printable Fraction Strips, a Scale Factor Planner, a Reasonableness Checklist, and a Sentence Frame Bank for equivalence, simplifying, scaling forward, scaling backward, missing values, same amount vs. more amount, error analysis, and mathematical decisions.

Sentence frames are provided as support rather than required wording. Learners may also explain their reasoning using a model, equation, scaling chain, or other clear mathematical language.

Skills Covered

By the end of the unit, learners work toward being able to scale fractions forward and backward, interpret scale factors in grids, strips, and collections, solve missing-value equations using scaling or simplification, and distinguish multiplicative scaling from incorrect additive patterns.

A central question throughout the unit is:

Am I renaming the same fraction value, or am I actually changing the amount?

That distinction is explicitly taught, modeled, practiced, and checked.

Best For

Best for ages 10–12. Ages 9+ may use the unit when secure fraction foundations are already in place.

This pack is especially useful for learners who can already work with fractions but still need help understanding why equivalent-fraction procedures work, identifying a scale factor, changing both terms consistently, solving missing-value equations, choosing a useful simplification path, or distinguishing an equivalent fraction from a larger amount.

It is designed for parent-guided learning and classroom support, with pacing options for focused practice, intervention, and enrichment. A standard path through the learner workbook is suggested across approximately 3–5 sessions.

This Pack May Not Be the Right Fit If…

This is not intended as a first introduction to fractions. The pack is an advanced extension and is best for learners who already have secure fraction foundations.

This is also not a high-volume drill workbook. The unit uses a smaller set of varied, reasoning-focused tasks that ask learners to model, explain, detect errors, choose strategies, and check whether a fraction value has been preserved.

This product is Unit 3: Scale Forward and Backward. It is not the complete Math That Matters fraction curriculum.

00 — Start Here: Parent & Educator Guide — 14 pages

01 — Learner Workbook: Teaching + Practice — 41 pages

02 — Answer Key & Support Tools — 20 pages

The Parent & Educator Guide is designed to remain readable in grayscale; blue and gold shading are used to help identify structure but are not required for solving the activities.

Meaning first. Procedure second.

The goal of Unit 3 is not simply to teach a learner to change two numbers. It is to help them understand what changes, what stays the same, and why equivalent fractions continue to represent the same value.
